St. Lazarus is the leper mentioned by Christ in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man in the Gospel of Luke and is also known as Lazaro.
The Order of St. Lazarus was formed in the 12th century to care for those afflicted by leprosy. The knights of the Order were lepers themselves. The Order established a hospital for lepers near Jerusalem.
